Florida Wireless Communications Device (WCD) Safety Course � Approved Online Course for Cellphone Use Citations
The Florida Wireless Communications Device (WCD) Safety Course is a 90-minute online class created for first-time offenders who were cited for handheld cellphone use while driving in specific high-risk areas.
According to Section 316.306(4)(a), Florida Statutes, this course was established by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) to improve awareness about distracted driving in school crossings, school zones, and work zones.
Drivers who receive a citation for texting or holding a phone in these areas may voluntarily elect to take the WCD course. To do so, the driver must notify the Clerk of Court in the county where the violation occurred that they wish to complete this course. Once accepted, the student must complete the course before the court�s assigned deadline.
Upon successful completion, the Clerk of Court may waive both the fines and court costs associated with the citation. Additionally, no points will be added to the driver license record. However, this option is only available once in a lifetime�� a second offense does not allow this election.
