Florida Driver Education Traffic Safety (DETS) Course � Required 6-Hour Course for First-Time Drivers Under 18
The Florida Driver Education Traffic Safety (DETS) Course is now a mandatory 6-hour online course for all first-time drivers under 18 years old. If you are 15 to 17 years of age and applying for your first learner�s license in Florida, you must complete this new requirement before you can proceed.
This course was created under the Florida Senate Bill 994/2025, which was passed to enhance teen driver safety across the state. According to the bill, teens must now complete a minimum 6-hour traffic safety course, which includes updated information on Florida laws, driving behaviors, substance abuse risks, and real-life crash prevention strategies.
Unlike the 4-hour TLSAE course required for adult first-time drivers, the DETS course provides expanded content tailored for younger drivers. It focuses heavily on decision-making, emotional control, and peer pressure behind the wheel�� key factors in teen driving incidents. Florida has made this course mandatory for good reason: young drivers are statistically more likely to be involved in fatal or serious crashes, especially within their first year of driving.
The DETS course is regulated and approved by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV). All students must study for at least six hours, as required by law. The course is broken into chapters, allowing students to start and stop as needed while meeting the time requirement.

Fast and Convenient
Once the final exam is passed, we issue a certificate of completion, and the result is electronically reported to the FLHSMV, as required. With this step completed, students may proceed to take their written permit test at a local Florida DMV.
